BIOGRAPHY - 2007
Why Velvet Avenue ?
HH : Initially, we were 'Velvet ' and we got used to it, but later on we found out that the name was already taken by someone else.
Carl : So we tried other names and thought about " Louise Avenue ", but that also was taken. We then chose " Velvet Avenue ".
How did you meet ?
HH : Carl put an advert on the internet in 2003. He was looking for a singer for a studio project... and I was looking for a guitar player to perform live... We were not meant to meet at all!
Carl : Indeed, we had nothing in common... We were both from different musical worlds: HH was into Irma Thomas, Guns and Roses and Janis Joplin and I listened to stuff like Depeche Mode, Keane and Linkin Park .
How would you describe your sound ?
Carl : Our sound probably comes from our musical differences. This common musical playground is Velvet Avenue . Now, it would be good to ask those who listen to our music. We are too much in it to tell.
HH : Some songs are very organic, others more electro, we've got some rock, some blues and ballads... We once had a demo with 2 songs which surprised quite a few. Until then, we were only playing acoustic shows, but we were working our sound in the studio. One of these two songs, "High on Love", was played on a local radio station.
Regarding your first album, why 'Maybe ' ?
HH : Maybe is that kind of word that is full of hopes and doubts.
Carl : Maybe represents everybody's life : full of choices and uncertainties. It is also the first song written by HH that we worked on together.
Tell us more about it…
Carl : Although the album is self-produced, we wanted it to sound as pro as possible. But we also wanted to keep a 'live' side to the album in order to avoid the sometimes too sterile sound of studio production. Once the final mix was done, we had it mastered outside. We have also asked Jean-François Maljean to perform the piano on "High on Love".
HH : The album is made of 12 songs which are quite varied. It is currently available on our internet site only (www.velvetavenue.net).
How do you see the future ?
HH : Now that we have put a band together for our shows, our objective is to do more concerts and festivals.
Carl : With the album, we are going to try and contact distributors and record companies. Also we are already busy working on new songs.
